About 7 years ago I started running. I had always had weak ankles from the time I was a kid and had sprained them many times. So my oldest brother recommended that I run in the grass for awhile to build up the strength in my ankles because the pounding on the hard pavement could really be damaging and mess things up almost before I started. So that is what I did. I figured out that behind my apartment there was this little strip of grass that was one tenth of a mile long. I went out and ran that little strip of grass back and forth. At first I would briskly walk a half a mile and then I would slowly run my half mile and then walk another half mile. I did this for several weeks and gradually could run a whole mile, and then a mile and a half. After that I ventured out onto the sidewalks and roads and would take the kids in a jogging stroller. After some time I ended up living back with my parents while I was going back to school and I kept up the running there. I got to where I was running 3.5 miles 3 times a week. I was so thin and felt so good.
After I got remarried I for some crazy reason let the running go for the most part. I have run off and on but not consistently. I could kick myself!
I decided today that I am going to run again. Its like I am back where I was when I started 7 years ago. My ankles are all weak and I am going to have to stay off of the pavement for awhile. I decided to see how long the path in our woods is because the forrest floor is nice and cushy and will be kind to my ankles while I build them up. The path through the woods is two tenths of a mile. Not too bad. At least there is a lot more to look at while I run in the woods than when I started on my one tenth of a mile grass strip behind my apartment.
I broke out my old running shoes....
They are pretty ratty looking. They have seen many miles. The tips of the soles at the toes are pealing and I have had to put new sole inserts in them because they have broken down quite a bit. They are very comfy. I hope they will get me back to my 3.5 miles 3 times a week again. We will see. I ran my half a mile and it was kind of rough. It will take a little bit to get my heart used to the work again.
Once I get to where I can run on the pavement again I have my new fancy shoes to wear. They cost too much to wear out in the mud of the woods.
I can't wait to wear them! Something else to look forward to!

It's easy to get in the habit of not exercising. Believe me, I know. I was doing really well walking every day last fall for three weeks, and then one day I just didn't feel like it, and I haven't walked since!
I'm sure you'll quickly pick it back up, especially now that you know what to do!
Yes, it is really easy to quit exercising... Why is it that everything that makes life better is hard to fit in?
interesting post..;)
Tasty Appetite
Opposition in all things.... So glad you're back to it!
